Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Mumbai Monorail a metro?

No, it is a straddle-beam monorail (rubber-tyred). It is distinct from Mumbai Metro (steel-rail) but serves as a complementary urban transit system.

Does it connect to Mumbai Metro?

Upper Parel and Curry Road areas are within walking distance of Mumbai Metro Line 3 stations and Mumbai Suburban Railway stations.

Why is ridership low?

Lower ridership is due to limited network length (19 km) and lack of direct interchange with suburban railway. Extension plans are being explored.

History & Evolution of Mumbai Monorail Network

The Mumbai Monorail, operated by MMRDA, was inaugurated in two phases: Chembur to Wadala in February 2014 and Wadala to Jacob Circle in March 2019. It was India's first monorail after the Chennai Monorail and remains the only operational fully elevated monorail system in India.
