History & Evolution of Chennai Metro Network
Phase 1 of the Chennai Metro Rail project covers a length of 45.046 km network and consists of two corridors: Corridor-1 (Blue Line) from Wimco Nagar to Airport and Corridor-2 (Green Line) from Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount. The first stretch from Koyambedu to Alandur was inaugurated on 29 June 2015. CMRL is quickly constructing an extensive Phase 2 network of over 118km.
Commuter Tips for Chennai Metro Network
Chennai Metro operates from 5:00 AM to 11:00 PM. To avoid long queues and save money, purchase a CMRL Smart Card which offers a flat 20% discount on every journey. Alternatively, you can use the CMRL mobile app to book QR tickets which offer similar discounts. Women commuters have access to dedicated ladies' coaches (typically the first coach in the direction of travel) which provide a safer and less crowded environment, especially during peak hours (8:30 AM – 10:30 AM and 5:30 PM – 8:00 PM).
Navigating the underground stations like Central, Egmore, and High Court is easy thanks to clear bi-lingual signage (Tamil and English). The Central Metro Station is massive; pay attention to the exit gates (A, B, C, D) to avoid surfacing far from your intended destination. Free WiFi is available at most underground stations.
For airport travelers, the Blue Line offers direct connectivity right into the domestic and international terminals (Level 2). It's the most reliable way to beat Chennai's unpredictable traffic on GST Road, getting you from Central Station to the Airport in just under 40 minutes.
Chennai Metro Connectivity Guide
Chennai Metro acts as a spine connecting all other major public transport modes in the city. The Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central Metro station is the primary interchange, linking both the Blue and Green lines with Chennai Central Railway Station, Moore Market Complex (Suburban Trains), and Park Station (MRTS).
St. Thomas Mount and Guindy stations offer seamless transfers to the MRTS and Southern Railway suburban network. For bus commuters, CMBT (Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus) station on the Green Line opens directly into Asia's largest bus terminus, connecting you to intra-state and inter-state buses. CMRL also operates share-autos and feeder cabs from stations like Alandur, Vadapalani, and Thirumangalam for last-mile connectivity.
Cyclists are welcome on the Chennai Metro; you can carry your bicycle on board free of charge. Most elevated stations provide covered bike parking spots to encourage green transport.

Network Evolution & Future Plans
Chennai Metro's Phase 2 expansion is a mammoth infrastructure project covering a massive 118.9 km network with three new corridors: Corridor 3 (Madhavaram to SIPCOT), Corridor 4 (Light House to Poonamallee Bypass), and Corridor 5 (Madhavaram to Sholinganallur).
When Phase 2 opens, it will revolutionize transport by deeply connecting the IT corridors of OMR (Old Mahabalipuram Road) and the western suburbs like Porur and Poonamallee to the city core. Many stations on Phase 2 will be completely underground and feature the latest driverless train technology (GoA4). The entire network will transition to an open-loop National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) system, fully integrating with MTC buses and future transport services.
